The system largely follows that used in Formula 1, with cars being led on a formation lap behind the safety car before forming up with their front wheels inside their allocated pit space.

A five-second warning will be given before the first of the starting lights are illuminated.

Two rows of two red lights will then light up in sequence over a total of six steps, and all will remain illuminated for a delay of between 0.5s and 3.0s before being switching from red to green, giving the signal to start.

A false start will be declared if a car moves or lines up out of its grid place before the light sequence is complete.

Alternatively, an aborted start can be declared before the final panel of red lights is illuminated.

Under those circumstances the full-course caution lights will be turned on, any driver responsible for causing the start to be abandoned will be moved to the rear of the field, and a rolling start will be implemented.
