Sato placed on five-race probation

Takuma Sato has been placed on probation by IndyCar for the next five races following his accident at Pocono last weekend.

Saturday, July 13, 2013 (7:59 pm)
IndyCar officials declared the Japanese driver to have violated Rule 9.3.1.1, which states that “a driver must not engage in reckless, careless and/or overly aggressive actions or unsportsmanlike behaviour toward other members” when he ran into Ryan Hunter-Reay’s car in pitlane during the race.

The probation period will end at the Baltimore race on September 1, with IndyCar reserving the right to impose additional penalties if the AJ Foyt Enterprises racer’s driving standards do not improve.

Sato took the first IndyCar win of his career at Long Beach in April, and goes into this weekend’s Toronto event sitting 10th in the standings.
