Bottas says beating Ferrari is Williams priority

Valtteri Bottas says the Williams Formula 1 team is focused on beating Ferrari to third place in this year's constructors' championship rather than trying to catch Red Bull for second.

Williams reclaimed third spot in the F1 makes race from the Scuderia by recording a three-four result in the recent Italian Grand Prix, while Ferrari only scored two points at its home race thanks to Kimi Raikkonen's ninth placed finish.

Second-placed Red Bull, which finished fifth and sixth at Monza, holds a 93-point lead over Williams and Bottas said a top-three finish for his team is the realistic target as this season heads into its final six races.

When asked if Williams was looking to chase down Red Bull, Bottas said: "That could be more difficult. We know they have some tracks to come where they are going to be really, really strong. For us the priority is to try to beat Ferrari, but you never know, anything can happen.

"All we are going to do is focus on getting the maximum points for the team. If it's enough to catch Red Bull then it is."

The gap between Williams and Ferrari stands at just 15 points and the most recent races at low-downforce circuits Spa and Monza were expected to suit the Williams FW36, while the forthcoming event on the Singapore street circuit should represent a tougher challenge.

Bottas has recorded four podium finishes in the last six races and still expects Williams will be able to fight for more before the campaign is finished.

"Singapore, maybe Brazil, they could be difficult ones [tracks], but we reckon there are some good ones to come [too]," Bottas added.  "We are still aiming to bring some updates later in the season, so Suzuka, Austin and Abu Dhabi, for example, I think we can fight for the podium definitely. We'll keep pushing."
