Its participation had been expected as a result of its involvement in the all-electric series’ maiden campaign.

The French manufacturer has played a role in the control powertrains, overseeing the integration of a McLaren Electronics electric motor and electronics, and batteries from Williams Advanced Engineering.

It also linked with the Alain Prost-led e.dams outfit, which sealed the teams’ championship during London’s season finale, and nearly took Sebastien Buemi to the drivers’ championship.

“We are becoming a full constructor from next season, so we are developing a powertrain for the car, so next year it will be Renault,” Patrice Ratti, Renault Sport Technologies CEO, said.

“This year it’s Spark-Renault and it’s used by all the teams, next year it’s Renault used by e.dams-Renault.

“We are doing Formula E to be consistent with our strategy in electric vehicles, and because we think it’s the future to help grow the technology, and also show to the people that EVs are not only good for the environment, but they can be exciting and fun.”

Renault is one of eight entities producing packages for the 2015/16 season, with fellow French manufacturer Citroen announcing on Saturday that it will enter the series with its DS brand and Virgin Racing.
