Ferrari focus on car, not 2016 line-up

Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene says his team’s main focus is on improving its car and fighting Mercedes rather than deciding on Kimi Raikkonen’s Formula 1 future.

Sebastian Vettel gave Ferrari its second victory of the season in Hungary, with the team on course for its first one-two since the 2010 German Grand Prix until Raikkonen retired with an MGU-K problem.

It was Raikkonen’s third retirement of the year and came at a time when his future is the subject of intense speculation as Ferrari has yet to decide whether to take up an option on his services for 2016.

“Our goal now is to focus on the car,” said Arrivabene. “We have time to talk about drivers [later].

“I thought Kimi was having a great race. Congratulations to him for what he was doing on Sunday.

“Unfortunately something happened and we didn’t have the double.”

With a four-week break before the next race in Belgium, which includes a two-week mandatory factory shutdown, Arrivabene said there would be no thought about contracts during that time.

“During the summer, you normally have a break so you are not deciding, working or thinking,” he said.

“You are swimming, climbing, going mountain biking or whatever it is – otherwise it is not a break. It is work.”

Raikkonen was pragmatic after his disappointing grand prix, when he ran second for two thirds of the race.

“Obviously it would have been nice to have been one and two,” said the 2007 world champion.

“But the end result is retirement so people can look at it two ways – that we did well or they can just look at the end result.

“I know which way I look at it, that’s why I said we have the speed.

“We have a couple things which are issues here and there.

“We somehow have to change that. We still have a great team and a great result we can deliver.

“We [just] have to finish the race in the first place.”
