Vergne switches to Virgin-DS team

Ex-Formula 1 driver Jean-Eric Vergne will switch from Andretti Autosport to the DS-powered Virgin team for the 2015/16 Formula E campaign.

Vergne joined the series from round three of the 2014/15 campaign, taking three pole positions and two podiums to finish seventh in the standings with Andretti.

He will partner the Virgin squad’s lead driver Sam Bird, who finished fifth in the championship last season with two wins.

“I am delighted to be joining the team at such an exciting time,” said Vergne.

“With the DS brand coming on board, I am looking forward to being aligned with a French, forward-thinking marque.

“I understand there are a number of exciting things going on behind the scenes that should ensure we have a competitive start to the season.”

Team principal Alex Tai added: “Both Sam and Jean-Eric are exceptional talents and I believe we now have one of the strongest driver pairings on the grid.

“I’m looking forward to being able to compete for regular honours from race to race.”

Jaime Alguersuari was Bird’s regular team-mate during the first Formula E season, but the Spaniard, who was forced to miss the London finale on health grounds, was recently ruled out of returning to the cockpit in time for the new campaign.

Formula E pre-season testing gets under way next week with a two-day test starting on Monday at Donington.
