F1 relaxes rules over current cars for demos

Formula 1's Sporting Regulations have been relaxed in order to allow current-spec cars to be run at any demonstration events organised by Liberty Media.

Running outside of Grand Prix weekends is tightly restricted, with eight pre-season test days and four in-season days attended by all teams, alongside Pirelli tyre testing.

Meanwhile, teams are allowed to run current-spec cars during two filming days, limited to 100km on Pirelli promotional tyres, and two 'Demonstration Events' [DEs].

DE running is limited to 15km, and must not take place on F1 circuits, meaning they are often used to celebrate titles, such as when Mercedes ran at its Stuttgart base last December.

However, a clause has been added to next year's Sporting Regulations, allowing current-spec, or year-old cars, to also be used during "demonstration events organised by the Commercial Rights Holder".

Liberty Media, which took control of the sport in January, has been keen to explore new ideas, and organised the F1 Live London event in the build-up to the British Grand Prix.

However, due to regulatory restrictions, the bulk of teams used two-year old cars, some brought historic machinery, while Haas did not appear, as it does not have a running showcar.

Liberty is eager to hold similar events in the future and the change to the regulations now means that current-year cars are permitted from 2018.
