Lewis Hamilton is determined to cut out the penalties that blotted an otherwise perfect 2020 season for the world champion.
The 35-year-old was penalised by the stewards at the Austrian, Italian and Russian Grands Prix, with the time-loss costing him a potential victory on each occasion.

Hamilton was given a grid drop ahead of the opening race of the year after failing to lift under yellow flags during qualifying, before picking up a five-second penalty in the race following a collision with Alex Albon.

At Monza, the Mercedes driver was given a 10-second stop-and-go penalty for entering a closed pitlane, while he picked up two five-second penalties in Sochi for conducting illegal practice starts.

Asked how he planned on cutting out such errors going forward, Hamilton said that he would have to be more “vigilant and diligent”.

“I learnt a lesson from it and they won’t be able to catch me out for that again, that’s for sure,” he said.

“I’m just going to be very vigilant and diligent, moving forwards. And not only as an athlete, I’m always trying to find an edge. I’m always trying to find that extra bit.

“It’s a fine line between being over the edge and beneath it. It’s fine if that one was over the edge. I learnt from it and it won’t happen again.”
