Gasly: Monza win is in my mind and will never go away
Pierre Gasly has revealed that he can remember “every single second” of his dramatic Italian Grand Prix win at Monza.
Pierre Gasly has revealed that he can remember “every single second” of his dramatic Italian Grand Prix win at Monza.
The Frenchman enjoyed an incredible 2020 season, capped off by his sensational win at the Temple of Speed.
Lewis Hamilton went into a huge lead from the start while his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas slipped back, but a penalty to Hamilton for entering the pitlane unsafely saw the race open up.
Charles Leclerc’s shunt into the barriers led to the race being red-flagged and from the standing restart, Gasly managed to get ahead of effective pole position sitter Lance Stroll.
With Carlos Sainz bearing down on him in a faster McLaren, the AlphaTauri driver kept his cool and came home in first place for a historic win and his team’s first since 2008.
“I remember every single second of that race and of the celebration,” Gasly told Autosport. “It’s something which is in my mind and will never go away.
“I would say this year was so compact and intense that it was actually hard to really take the time off, and get to relax and enjoy as much as probably I would have done in a more normal scenario without COVID.
“Still, when I had a week’s break between two races and I could get back home and I could realise, ‘OK, that’s what we’ve done’, and really try to think over and remember all of the emotions that we lived.
“It was something quite incredible. This year, Mercedes won pretty much all the races, except Max and Checo – and us. So it was really something incredible.”
